    1. I agree. The use of appropriate lighting, sound and quality of picture added to the overall purpose of the presentation.

    2. Yes. This is a well done video. Captures the message quite well.

  2. Great video, the benefits are enormous! The research team benefits, the slam dwellers benefit and the entire projects is a great success and above all, not waiting for government that never comes on board all the time.

    1. Owen, I think your comment fits in well with our informal discussion earlier. We should learn not to wait for government or politicians but try to take responsibility. The trying part is very hard though, for money and power creates such an imbalance.

    2. i really liked the comment by one of the members of the research team where she said she benefited as a person in terms of her career growth through learning how to work with people of various backgrounds but all aimed at improving the lives of the community

  3. The video has great movement, moving with the speaker and showing the pace of those around them as well. The sounds of people talking and walking- living!- in the space made it alive and worked with the visual movement to create a sense of purpose - moving towards something. And I really liked that they started with the people and the context, not jump right in with the topic. What I did find a bit irritating was that some people's senses seemed to be cut short, almost a blunt editing. Perhaps fading could have been applied in these instances to help create the vocal sense of movement and not just create the sudden 'dead air'.

    1. True. I had an issue with the audio too. In some instances it got cut abruptly. Some of the words from the participants are also not very clear.

    2. This is a good comment and analysis of the video.

    3. Very "close reading" of the video text Magriet. You describe the meta-level analysis of the video very well and shows how the video-production process supports the message (which includes the emotional feelings etc).

  4. Digital researcher is about doing research that is context related, to create real solution/s. It is also about co-creating (i.e. researchers and community members) new knowledge. Addressing real problems need inter-disciplinary approach, mutual understanding. Through interaction, prototypes are creating and new social entrepreneurs emerge. This approach is similar to Kaufer and Scharmer (2014) approach of leading from the emerging future.
I am sold to this approach.
    Awesome!

    1. Molefe, I like that term 'the emerging future'. And perhaps we should help show all people that they are the emerging future, they CAN and ARE the movers for change.

    2. So right. And how can this video (or video in general) be helpful in that co-creation process?

    3. It can be used to co-create knowledge that in a non-scientific, perhaps using sub-titles in the video.

  5. Video SHOWS how the integration of knowledge, research and working in communities can function. In this sense the medium (video) is the message (although there does not seem to be only one call to action, but rather a number of important moments).
The video is of high quality and well made - it is on the highest point of the Digital Scholarly type of video (it was made by a media production company).
Loved the videos honesty as well as how they talked about scientific concepts in more plain language.
The video has a story line and has a clear structure.

  6. This was an interesting example of participatory action-based research that examined the role of multidisciplinary teams to identify possible solutions to address the basic living conditions of the Enkanini Settlement community. The initiative highlighted the need to focus not only on the improvement of electricity and sanitation but to also take into the role of lifestyle in healthy living. It is however equally important that these initiatives take into account the need for sustainable development and should not be seen as 'helicopter research'

    1. Very true. It is a great example of how local knowledge can be well integrated with research to produce sustainable solutions.

    2. Hold your horses, what is helicopter research

  7. The research experimented in this video are really community based however if the findings are not turned into companies for the benefit of the entire community, there will be bias against future participation by the community into collaborative research.

    1. So true! and the fact that most research just ends up in papers and the archives.

  8. Enaknini: Taken by Force is a well done video that clearly articulates the energy challenges faced in the slum area and gives a the process with which a solution was found. Different perspectives from the stakeholders are shared.

The video has been shot from different angles, giving the viewer a holistic perspective on the issue under discussion. However there seems to be an issue with the audio because some of the words from the participants are not clear.

The overall message of knowledge bringing social change is spot on.

    1. Good remark about the audio. Remember what we said yesterday: audio first! But I think it had mostly to do with the equipment in the room :-).

  9. Feedback on the video itself: The producers allow the viewer to process information in its entirety i.e as the researchers/commentators explain the project and its dynamics, views of exactly what they speak of appear on the screen.

The use of text on the screen also provides the audience with clarity.

  10. The video is highly educative and engaging. A lot of things resonate with me from the video. One was what one of the commentator said that researcher should be activist. This is a controversial debate in academia. While some believe that when researcher's become activist, it reduces the level of objectivity of the research. In other words, the research become value loaded and may become total bias. Second point was about "knowledge without social change is meaningless. In academia, the saying goes that you either publish or perish

  11. I like that the video also discusses the challenge of how researchers fit in and being seen as "outsiders" when working in slums.
